Expertise: The overarching goals of Dr. Greg Allen’s research are to use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and neuropsychological methods to: identify brain systems that are different from normal in autism spectrum disorders (ASD); determine whether and how these differences are related to ASD symptoms; guide the search for ASD causes; guide the search for ASD treatments; and evaluate responses to treatment.

Expertise: Dr. Atwood has spent over 15 years working on applied research projects focused on physical activity, obesity, worksite wellness, nutrition education evaluation, diabetes, and HIV prevention and care. She has worked with a number of programs at the Texas Department of State Health Services including the Women, Infants & Children Program (WIC), Obesity, Diabetes and HIV Prevention and Care. Dr. Atwood’s contracts focus on providing content and evaluation expertise, capacity building and program development for stakeholders at the federal, state and local level. She is currently working on issues surrounding changes in health care delivery systems impacted by health care reform and capacity building utilizing complexity science, generative leadership and an appreciative approach.

Expertise: My research focuses primarily on theorizing the nature of short- and long-term interests in STEM disciplines, and designing learning environments that are truly engaging to students. This has led me to investigate learning and interest-based participation in settings as diverse as classrooms, after-school programs, and hobby practices (model rocketry and amateurs astronomy). Intersecting with this central research focus, my other research interests include the use and creation of technical representations and the way these mediate knowing and learning; the discourse and practices of engaged participation in STEM classrooms; and social justice issues in STEM education. This work has appeared in publications such as the Journal of the Learning Sciences, Cognition and Instruction, and the Journal of Mathematical Behavior.

Dr. Bryant was chosen to participate in the National Science Foundation funded “Beginning Substantive Collaboration between Mathematics Education and Special Education Symposium: Teaching Mathematics to Students within the RtI Process.” She is the author/co-author of books, tests, and research articles that focus on educational interventions for improving the mathematics and reading performance of students with learning disabilities, and the use of assistive technology for individuals with disabilities. Expertise: Imagine the following scenarios: a student who is building an understanding of physics by working practice problems, an educator who is trying to correct student misconceptions about evolution, and a traveler who has recently returned from Paris telling friends about the trip of a lifetime. The common thread connecting these examples is that the memories of the individuals described are changing through their actions. Dr. Butler is interested in the malleability of memory – the cognitive processes and mechanisms that cause memories to change or remain stable over time. More specifically, his research focuses on how the process of retrieving memories affects the content (e.g., events, specific details, narrative structure, etc.) and phenomenological characteristics (e.g., confidence, emotional intensity, vividness, etc.) of those memories. Retrieval is often viewed as a neutral event in which the contents of memory are assessed but left unchanged. However, a large body of research has shown that retrieval actually modifies memory. His program of research addresses both theoretical issues in cognitive psychology and practical applications to education and mental health. The broad aim of this research program is to gain a better understanding of how retrieval affects: memories held by individuals and those shared by groups (i.e. collective memories); memories for simple materials (e.g., word lists, facts, etc.) to more complex memories that are rich in sensory detail, emotion, and self-relevance, among other characteristics; and newly formed, episodic memories in contrast to well-learned semantic memories that have been integrated into the knowledge base.

Expertise: Coyle directs the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education's Human Performance Laboratory, and his research focuses on the metabolic and cardiovascular factors that limit aerobic exercise performance. He is expert in the nutritional needs of active people during exercise, especially regarding their carbohydrate, fat and fluid requirements. Furthermore, he has developed technology to measure maximal neuromuscular power output over a few seconds. A decline in an athlete's maximal power output may be a sign of overtraining.

Expertise: The research of Dr. Falbo is primarily focused on only children. Most broadly, she is concerned with the long-term effects of siblings on human development. In addition to this topic, Dr. Falbo recently completed a longitudinal study of “at risk” Latino high school students in Austin, Texas. The students were followed through high school. Using data from this study, Dr. Falbo collaborated with Dr. Harriett D. Romo to write Latino High School Graduation. Both are currently engaged in a 25-year follow-up about these former students and their families to gain a deeper understanding of the enduring difficulties associated with the lack of a high school diploma.

Expertise: Huriya's research interests are related to the social and political dimensions of privatization and market-based reforms in education, especially school choice and its implications for equity and diversity. A second strand of research examines how research on such reforms is used by policymakers at the local, state, and federal levels. Huriya is currently working on several projects related to school choice and charter schools. Building on her dissertation research, she is examining competition for teachers in New Orleans schools, school-level marketing strategies, and the political economy of market-based reforms in New Orleans. Expertise: Barbara Pazey's research interests focus on the development of socially just administrator and teacher leadership preparation programs in the context of meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of special population students; ethical leadership and decision making processes applied to special education law and policy; and the analysis of P-12 education programs within urban and/or turnaround school settings that empower student voice, recognize and foster the growth of special population students' 21st century skills such as creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking, and provide the prerequisite knowledge, skills, and dispositions that enable them to graduate from high school, ready for college and/or a career. Expertise: As a social scientist, my work is focused on the subject of the conditions fostering high academic success for children of poverty and the stratification of learning opportunities for children of color. Also, I am engaged in evaluating significant policy issues at the State level. Over the years I have raised more than 22 million dollars in research and development funds from The Spencer Foundation, The Annenberg Foundation, the Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Foundation, the Texas Education Agency, the National Science Foundation, the Houston Endowment, Inc., The Brown Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Education, among others. Pedro Reyes is the author of Resiliency and Success: Migrant children in the US (2004); Lessons From High Poverty High Performance Schools: Creating Learning Communities (1999); and Teachers and Their Workplace: Commitment, Performance, and Productivity (1990). In addition, he has authored more than 75 articles, book chapters, monographs, and reviews and has presented more than 50 papers at national academic conferences. His research has appeared in such journals as Educational Administration Quarterly, The High School Journal, Journal of Educational Research, and the Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences. He was Editor of the Book Review Section of Educational Researcher, Associate Editor of the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, and reviewer of many other scholarly journals.
