Expertise: Dr. Atwood has spent over 15 years working on applied research projects focused on physical activity, obesity, worksite wellness, nutrition education evaluation, diabetes, and HIV prevention and care. She has worked with a number of programs at the Texas Department of State Health Services including the Women, Infants & Children Program (WIC), Obesity, Diabetes and HIV Prevention and Care. Dr. Atwood’s contracts focus on providing content and evaluation expertise, capacity building and program development for stakeholders at the federal, state and local level. She is currently working on issues surrounding changes in health care delivery systems impacted by health care reform and capacity building utilizing complexity science, generative leadership and an appreciative approach.

Expertise: Dr. Bearman’s current research interests center on three main agenda: 1) Using consumer feedback and practice-based evidence to adapt existing empirically supported interventions for better fit in usual care contexts where children and families receive services 2) Identifying training and supervision processes that foster the adoption, implementation, and sustainability of empirically supported interventions for youth and 3) The role of treatment integrity (adherence, competence, and differentiation) in the effectiveness of youth interventions. Dr. Bearman has specific expertise in empirically supported interventions for youth with depression, anxiety, conduct disorders and traumatic stress; dissemination and implementation science; the development of observational behavioral coding systems to assess therapy and supervision process; and mixed-methods approaches to research, including experimental and quasi-experimental design, qualitative and community participatory research, and longitudinal risk factor modeling. Dr. Bearman has also worked with community partners in a number of different child service contexts, including schools, clinics, and child welfare agencies.

Expertise: The research of Dr. Falbo is primarily focused on only children. Most broadly, she is concerned with the long-term effects of siblings on human development. In addition to this topic, Dr. Falbo recently completed a longitudinal study of “at risk” Latino high school students in Austin, Texas. The students were followed through high school. Using data from this study, Dr. Falbo collaborated with Dr. Harriett D. Romo to write Latino High School Graduation. Both are currently engaged in a 25-year follow-up about these former students and their families to gain a deeper understanding of the enduring difficulties associated with the lack of a high school diploma.

Expertise: Jessica’ overarching research goal is to redirect and re-conceptualize research and instructional practice in mathematics such that students with LD can grow their conceptual knowledge. Two primary focal areas within this goal are a) documenting initial or informal conceptual understandings of children labeled as LD within a targeted mathematical area (i.e., rational numbers) and b) understanding how growth of conceptual knowledge occurs in the targeted area and can be nurtured through the learning process. A natural and essential extension of this work includes a secondary focal area concerning c) instructional practices special educators use to facilitate children’s learning of mathematics and, more holistically, how educators can be supported to improve their teaching.

Expertise: Dr. Jowers directs two major grant projects, including the Texas Initiatives for Children’s Activity & Nutrition (I-CAN!) project, and the Walk Texas! Project. Texas I-CAN! is an obesity prevention project that aims to increase both physical activity and healthy eating in elementary school children. This project is currently funded through the National Institutes of Health/ Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center for Child Development.The goal is to train elementary school teachers to incorporate physical activity into their academic lessons daily and to evaluate the corresponding physical activity changes and academic impact on the participating children. This is a 5-year project that will recruit 30 elementary schools within Central Texas. Dr. Jowers was part of the creation and refinement of this program since 2001 and has extensive experience working with children, elementary school teachers, and independent school districts. Walk Texas! is funded by the Department of State Health Services (DSHS)/Texas Diabetes Council/Program to provide diabetes prevention and technical assistance/expertise to state-funded community diabetes prevention projects. Additionally, Dr. Jowers manages the online reporting system, termed the Program Management and Tracking System (PMATS), for the Texas Department of State and Health Services. This system tracks clinical outcomes across various programs (physical activity, nutrition, diabetes self management) to determine the impact of the programs on diabetes prevention and control across the state of Texas.

Expertise: As a social scientist, my work is focused on the subject of the conditions fostering high academic success for children of poverty and the stratification of learning opportunities for children of color. Also, I am engaged in evaluating significant policy issues at the State level. Over the years I have raised more than 22 million dollars in research and development funds from The Spencer Foundation, The Annenberg Foundation, the Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Foundation, the Texas Education Agency, the National Science Foundation, the Houston Endowment, Inc., The Brown Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Education, among others. Pedro Reyes is the author of Resiliency and Success: Migrant children in the US (2004); Lessons From High Poverty High Performance Schools: Creating Learning Communities (1999); and Teachers and Their Workplace: Commitment, Performance, and Productivity (1990). In addition, he has authored more than 75 articles, book chapters, monographs, and reviews and has presented more than 50 papers at national academic conferences. His research has appeared in such journals as Educational Administration Quarterly, The High School Journal, Journal of Educational Research, and the Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences. He was Editor of the Book Review Section of Educational Researcher, Associate Editor of the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, and reviewer of many other scholarly journals.

Expertise: The research of Dr. Marie-Anne Suizzo focuses on cultural models of parenting during early childhood and adolescence, fathering and father-child relationships across cultures and ethnic groups, as well as parental academic socialization and its effects on children's and adolescents’ academic motivation and achievement, especially among at-risk youth. Dr. Suizzo is also interested in parental racial and ethnic socialization and its effects on the development of ethnic minority children.
