Sustaining by Renewing
Facilities Services restores and renews materials, equipment and other university resources so that their useful life can be extended.
- The Furniture Shop rebuilds, refinishes and reupholsters hundreds of furniture items each year and even reupholsters university vehicles. Since 2011, the Furniture Shop has diverted approximately 123,000 pounds of furniture and associated items from the landfill through its restoration and repair processes. This has saved almost $20,000 in landfill disposal costs.
- Facilities Maintenance Renovation & Renewal (R&R) is tasked with assessing and renewing building systems to keep the buildings functional. R&R includes projects with an energy-saving focus, such as upgrading air handlers, doors, and chiller pumps. R&R is also assigned to renew infrastructure such as roadways, sidewalks, and landscaping to support or enhance the lifespan of buildings and help ensure accessibility.
- Facilities Maintenance Building Optimization team (BOT) seeks to restore buildings' heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to operate in accordance with their original design. The BOT selects buildings in phases to undergo an energy audit and performance review. The team also makes low- or no-cost changes to the systems to improve energy efficiency and performance of the buildings.
