Sound + Vision is a program presented by the Visual Arts Center, a vibrant collaboration and exhibition space in the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Austin. The program presents experiments in sound, video and performance. Designed in collaboration with contemporary artists, each program provides multisensory experiences through the pairing of visual art and non-traditional media.
Sound + Vision proudly welcomes Jace Clayton’s The Julius Eastman Memorial Dinner to Texas Performing Arts’ McCullough Theater. Inspired by the late Julius Eastman’s powerful and rarely performed oeuvre, Clayton creates a work that restages two Eastman compositions in new arrangements. Interspersed with short theatrical vignettes and original material, JEMD is a 70-minute performance piece for grand pianos, live electronics, and vocal elements that focuses on the music and life of Julius Eastman (1940-1990), a gay African-American composer, pianist, and vocalist whose works were both hypnotic and confrontational.
Jace Clayton is an interdisciplinary artist living in Brooklyn whose practice explores the intersections of sound, technology, memory, and public space. Performing as DJ /rupture, Clayton has toured internationally, DJ’d in a band with Norah Jones, and was the turntable soloist with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra. He …
