B.F.A. in Dance, Junior
Favorite class in Theatre and Dance:
My favorite class in the program is definitely PDPR (Projects in Dance Performance and Repertory). Essentially, this is our company class. In it, Dance Repertory Theatre, the student dance performance company, learns and rehearses pieces for our performances. I love it because it provides us with the chance to work on our performance quality as well as get to collaborate with our peers and professors. I wouldn't be the dancer I am today without this class.
Favorite thing about Austin:
There are too many things to name! My absolute favorite part of Austin though, is the university; there is a vibrant energy that runs through the university, as well as the city, that makes me feel alive. Everyone is incredibly nice and I enjoy waking up in the morning with the prospect of meeting new people and experiencing new things. It's exhilarating.
Growing up in a military family, we moved around for most of my childhood, but we finally settled in a small town in Northern California. It was there that I discovered my love of dance when I saw my first dance performance at the age of thirteen. Right then and there, I decided that that was what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Throughout high school, I took dance classes and did summer camps for performing and eventually joined a local company, which only reinforced my love of dance and performing. However, I came to UT because I knew that in addition to being a dancer, I wanted to get a world-class education at the same time, and I haven't looked back since. Being here has allowed me to not only pursue my education, but perform with my fellow dancers in works by choreographers such as Charles Anderson, Holly Williams, Ohad Naharin and others, as well as go on tour and perform abroad.
I just returned from a two-week tour of Austria and a four-week intensive in Salzburg with other members of Dance Repertory Theatre. What I look forward to most this upcoming year is partaking in the Cohen New Works Festival again, a biennial, week-long showcase of student created and produced performances. This was quite possibly the highlight of my freshman year at UT. From there, I am also pursuing a second degree in history, and I hope that one day I can unite these two passions.
