Tinsley Oden: Computational Science and Engineering: Emergence of an Academic Discipline at The University of Texas

The use of computer modeling and simulation of physical events and of the behavior of engineering systems has had a profound impact on scientific discovery and on modern technology. The importance of computational science and engineering (CSE) as an academic discipline was recognized in the 1990's by The University of Texas at Austin, and led to the creation of ICES, the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, now recognized as the home of the leading research and academic programs in this discipline. This talk describes the foundation of CSE, the programs and research activities at ICES, and what can be expected as future developments in this subject.
About Tinsley Oden
J. Tinsley Oden is the founding Director of the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES). The Institute supports broad interdisciplinary research and academic programs in computational engineering and sciences, involving four colleges and 17 academic departments within UT Austin.
Dr. Oden is Associate Vice President for Research, Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, Professor of Mathematics, Professor of Computer Sciences, and he holds a Cockrell Family Regents Chair in Engineering #2 and the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Centennial Chair in Computer Systems.
He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and is the recipient of many national and international awards, including 10 medals, six honorary doctorates, and the University of Texas Presidential Award Citation (equivalent to an honorary doctorate). And, he was knighted Chevalier de l'ordre des Palmes Académiques from the French government.
Most recently, he received the 2011 SIAM/ACM Prize in Computational Science and Engineering (CS&E Prize) for his “outstanding research contributions to the development and use of mathematical and computational tools and methods for the solution of science and engineering problems.”
