Micaela Alvarez is a United States District Judge sitting at Laredo for the Southern District of Texas. She began her service as a United States District Judge in December 2004 after being nominated by President George W. Bush.
Before becoming a United States District Judge, she was a litigation attorney and partner at Hole & Alvarez, L.L.P. in McAllen, Texas. She handled all types of litigation, but primarily insurance defense, employment defense, wrongful discharge defense and medical malpractice defense cases. She practiced in the county, state and federal courts. Judge Alvarez graduated from the University of Texas School of Law (Doctor of Jurisprudence in May of 1999) and the University of Texas, (Bachelor of Social Work) in December of 1980.
Judge Alvarez has been a board member of the State Office of Risk Management (1997-2005); McAllen Medical Center; Board of Governors Member (1998-2001); McAllen Airport Advisory Board; Chairman 2001 (1998-2003); and Presidential Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans(2002-2003). Prior to being a federal judge, from July, 1995 to December, 1996, she was the presiding judge for the 139th Judicial District Court in Hidalgo County, Texas.
