    Private Prisons: Criminal Justice Issue

Join ACS and criminal justice advocates for a conversation about the private detention industry in the United States. Experts and advocates will discuss the proliferation of the for-profit incarceration model, the consequences for detained individuals and targeted communities, and the challenges the industry poses to advocates and attorneys.

Our conversation will include Bob Libal, Executive Director of Grassroots Leadership. Grassroots Leadership fights to end for-profit incarceration and reduce reliance on criminalization and detention through direct action, organizing, research, and public education. We will also have a speaker from the Texas Criminal Justice Coalition (TCJC). TCJC advances solutions that transform the adult and youth justice systems to strengthen families and foster safer communities.

Lunch will be served. We look forward to seeing you there!

    Battling for Immigrants’ Rights

3:30 pm to 5 pm in the Eidman Courtroom - reception to follow in the Jamail Pavilion

Join us for a talk by Lucas Guttentag on developments in immigration since the passage of the Immigration Act of 1965 and his experiences battling for immigrants’ rights as a litigator and advocate and, of late, inside government.

Guttentag is the founder and former national director of the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project, who is currently serving in the Obama administration as Senior Counselor to the Director of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services at the Department of Homeland Security, on leave from his positions at Yale and Stanford Law Schools. Guttentag is also a former law clerk to Judge William Wayne Justice, and his talk will kick off the 10th anniversary celebration for the William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law.

Guttentag’s visit as a G. Rollie White Public Interest Scholar is supported by a generous gift from the G. Rollie White Trust. The program brings outstanding legal scholars, practitioners and advocates from the field of public service to Texas Law to foster discussion of issues related to public interest law, to raise the profile of lawyers working in this area, and to encourage students to view public service as an honored and expected part of every legal career. Guttentag is Texas Law’s fourth G. Rollie White Public Interest Scholar.
