The Career Services Office (CSO) assists students with their career goals by informing them of career options, providing job search strategies and resources, and connecting them with potential employers. The CSO hosts more than 75 professional development and career-related programs throughout the year, including one of the nation’s largest on-campus interview programs. In Spring 2012, the CSO established the UT Law Professional Development Institute, which is taught by industry experts and practicing attorneys, covering facets of new attorney professionalism most sought after by legal employers.

Each year, more than 600 legal employer offices participate in on-campus and off-campus interviewing programs to compete for UT Law students. The top firms from Texas, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington D.C., as well as several other markets, send representatives to recruit at UT Law. Consistently, UT Law is one of the top law schools who send first-year associates to the nation’s largest 250 law firms, as ranked by the e National Law Journal (NLJ).

In recent years, about 30 percent of our graduates accept employment in the public sector, which includes government agencies, the judiciary, the military, public interest, and other nonprofit organizations. Throughout the year, the CSO presents multiple programs and panels on careers in public service. In the fall, we host Public Service Table Talk, an opportunity for students to meet with attorneys who work in the public sector. In the spring, the CSO coordinates Public Service Career Fair, the largest legal public service interviewing event in Texas. Additionally, UT Law is a founding member of the Public Service Job Directory, formerly known as the Public Service Law Network Worldwide, a global database of public service opportunities available to law students.

With experienced counselors, all of whom are licensed attorneys, and a dedicated staff, the CSO also offers one-on-one career counseling, sponsors resume workshops, invites speakers to address students on career-related topics, publishes career-related handbooks, maintains a resource library, and manages an online job bank listing clerkships, fellowships, and part-time and postgraduate opportunities throughout Texas, the U.S., and the world. Additionally, we manage the UT Law Alumni-Student Connections LinkedIn Group, so students and alumni can connect about various career paths.
