Dr. Raj Patel, global food policy expert and award-wining writer, has been appointed Research Professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs. Patel will be engaged in a combination of teaching, researching, and filmmaking. Patel, formerly a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley’s Center for African Studies, will teach graduate courses on food policy at the LBJ School as well as select undergraduate courses across campus.

Clinical Professor Angela Evans is an exemplar of leadership and education in the public policy arena. Her achievements in advancing public policy have spanned a career in Washington, D.C. where she served as Deputy Director of the Congressional Research Service.  Now at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin, Professor Evans has distinguished herself as a dedicated and much beloved educator of a new generation of public leaders.

For the 2014-15 school year, Professor Todd Olmstead is running a Policy Research Project to benefit Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS). Over the course of the year, students will participate in research and analysis including ridealongs, guest speakers, and listening to emergency calls to determine how to optimize ATCEMS in the face of a changing healthcare scene.

The LBJ School of Public Affairs will present "Has the Obama Administration Gone Far Enough? A Food Policy Reform Update" featuring Former USDA Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan on Oct. 22. LBJ School Professors Erin Lentz and Raj Patel will also speak on a panel with Merrigan and lead a Q&A with the audience. The event will take place in SRH 3.122 at 12:15 PM. Lunch will be provided.

The LBJ School of Public Affairs will present "The Rise of Sectarianism in the Middle East in an Age of Western Hegemony: 1860-2014, " a lecture with Rice University Professor of History Ussama Makdisi, the first holder of the Arab-American Educational Foundation Chair of Arab Studies at Rice University, on Oct. 2 at 5 PM at the LBJ School's Bass Lecture Hall. This event is free and open to the public but registration is required.

This summer, the LBJ School hosted students from Mexico’s Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE), Israel’s Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy and Strategy at Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya (IDC), and from the LBJ School for a cultural exchange and professional development course focused on developing leadership skills.

The LBJ School of Public Affairs welcomed its newest incoming class of students with a week of orientation activities that culminated with "Gone to Texas," which featured a reception hosted by Dean Robert Hutchings and a march to the UT Tower for a special presentation of music, student videos and inspirational speakers. The LBJ School orientation week featured a series of events ranging from information sessions on academic and research opportunities to social events, all with the aim of providing an opportunity for new students to become comfortable as the newest members of the LBJ School community.
