Section Description

PRP Background: We live in an online world and people increasing expect online transparency concerning their tax dollars. Continuing work of a PRP last year on the same topic, this Policy Research Project will explore how to expand government financial transparency in Texas using new online tools. The PRP will work jointly with the PRP of Professor Gary Chapman (PA 680 #60840) and will involve students working in collaboration with Texas state agency leaders, members of the state legislature, local government officials and the media. The purpose of the PRP is to help the State of Texas and Texas local governments put more of their financial information online, and to help develop a user community of this new transparency effort.

Deliverables:
  •  Issue memos written by student teams in the fall semester
  • A report we produce that makes recommendations regarding implementation of online financial transparency in May
  • A conference that we sponsor on the topic in late April
Students participating in this PRP will gain the following experiences:
1.     Working with elected officials
2.     Leadership and team building
3.     Politics and public policy implementation
4.     Technology and public policy coordination
5.     Tracking and implementing legislation
6.     Public speaking
7.     Report writing
8.     Conference production
