She studies adult development and old age. She has conducted research and published numerous scholarly articles on positive and negative emotions in family relationships throughout adulthood. Her work has examined aging parents, grandparents and grandchildren, friends, acquaintances, and peripheral social ties. She is particularly interested in young adulthood and in old age. (Note She does not study marriage, romantic relationships,childhood  or adolescence)
