Dr. van Oort's research interests include:

  • Well construction & drilling performance optimization (e.g., drilling/completion efficiency optimization)
  • Drilling automation & well construction-related sensors, big data analytics, machine learning and AI
  • Well construction and repurposing for geothermal energy, CCS/CCUS, subsurface waste injection
  • Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD)
  • Well integrity, zonal isolation, wellbore cementing, well barrier design and verification, well abandonment & decommissioning
  • Drilling fluids technology, mud-shale interactions and high-performance fluid design
  • Wellbore rock mechanics / geomechanics (borehole stability, lost circulation, well control etc.)
