Understanding the influence of math symbols and vocabulary on math performance

During the 2015-2016 school year, we implement modules related to difficult symbols and vocabulary to students in 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th grades. Research assistants will administer pretests, implement the modules in classroom, administer posttests, and conduct data entry. I hope to learn (a) which symbols and vocabulary cause the most difficulty for students and (b) how to effectively teach about math symbols and vocabulary.
RAs must have availability during elementary and middle school hours (7:30a-3:30p).
RAs must enjoy working with young students. RAs must be responsible, punctual, and organized.
RAs will help with recruitment of teachers starting in September 2015. As teachers agree to participate, RAs go into school classrooms and administer math assessments with classrooms of students. RAs then implement modules in classrooms. Finally, RAs enter student scores in databases. This project finishes by April 2016.
