The Dream Taking Shape

Student Activity Center building
The Student Activity Center

As we first announced to you in the 2008 State of the Union newsletter, we will be opening a second building on campus so that we can better serve student life and activities.  In January of 2009, the dream of a second building began to take shape when ground was broken at the location just north of Gregory Gym on the East Mall.  The construction is right on schedule for a grand opening on January 17, 2011.

The Student Activity Center is a manifested student initiative.  Its main purpose is to serve the students of The University of Texas, support a diverse array of student interests and provide additional and alternative options for activity, event, meeting, dining and outdoor gathering spaces.

Upon completion the building will be approximately 100,000 square feet and include:

500-seat multi-use auditorium
150-seat black box theater for student performance groups
Ballroom
Meeting rooms and spaces
Multilevel lounge areas
Student Organization offices
Zen
Taco Cabana
Starbucks
Chick-fil-a

As it was originally intended, environment friendly elements are being used in the construction and we strive to earn a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold rating.  If this goal is met, the Student Activity Center would be the first such building on the UT campus.

It is inspiring to know that a dream which began when the Texas Union opened its doors in 1933, has grown to encompass two locations on campus for students to build a sense of community and to grow alongside their peers through utilizing these buildings and all they have to offer.
