Bill Powers on educating the future

The sheer size of The University of Texas at Austin is difficult to miss — 51,000 students, $633 million in research funding, 450,000 alumni. But at The University of Texas at Austin, size isn’t just about the numbers. It’s about, as President Bill Powers emphasizes, the “breadth of experiences” that students have. The contributions a university makes to the world. The leaders it produces. Powers says he aims to make UT Austin “the best public university in the nation.” How do you measure that?

By teaching students how to solve problems, advance knowledge and build “the foundation on which future generations will rely to make the world a better place.”
