Friday, September 30
3:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Texas Union, UNB 2.102, Eastwoods Room

Professor David Beaver will speak on preliminary results and assessment techniques developed through his National Science Foundation project entitled "Modeling Discourse and Social Dynamics in Authoritarian Regimes." This project is a collaboration with Professor James Pennebaker of UT's Department of Psychology, and with researchers at Cornell University (the lead group) and the University of Memphis. The project employs computational techniques to analyze corpora of texts in a range of languages, with the aim of better understanding the ways in which the language people use reflects their psychological states and social relationships. This discussion will focus on an analysis of Twitter use and social attitudes during the recent “Arab Spring”.
