"The Role of Face in Russo-American Relations: Lessons from the Conclusion of the Cold War and Prognoses for the Future"

During the turbulent years from 1989 to 1991, the George H. W. Bush administration ensured Soviet premier Mikhail Gorbachev could retreat from Soviet-held Eastern Europe without losing face. American policy-makers feared that if Gorbachev’s Kremlin colleagues perceived him as too weak, he might be replaced by someone who would undo the peaceful gains of democratization in Eastern Europe through force. This talk explores the concept of 'face' in international relations, particularly regarding Russia, using the end of the Cold War as a case study in its successful application, and explores some avenues for its application in contemporary Russo-American relations after the "Reset."

Simon Miles is a PhD student in the Department of History working on US-Soviet relations during the Andropov and Chernenko periods (1982-1985). He is a graduate of the University of Toronto and the London School of Economics.
