14th Annual Russian Spring Fest (April Concert)
Sat, April 26, 2014 • 7:00 PM • Unity Church of the Hills (9905 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, TX 78750)
The Russian Speakers Society presents a concert featuring two outstanding groups: The Russian Duo and The Flying Balalaika Brothers.
The Russian Duo, based in Cleveland, Ohio, is an international project, born out of a love of traditional music and classical elegance. Oleg Kruglyakov, balalaika virtuoso, and Terry Boyarsky, masterful pianist, have teamed up for exuberant, passionate performances. Their collaboration combines the mysterious sounds of balalaika with the expressive range of the piano. Featuring vocals and Russian percussion, their extensive repertoire draws from Russian folk music, romances, dances, classical music, and gypsy melodies.
The Flying Balalaika Brothers were originally comprised of two virtuoso native Russian musicians who combined classical training with folk traditions, later joining American musicians to create a unique sound. First established themselves at small festivals (Gilroy Festival, Sawdust Festival, Valencia Street Market, Pecan Street Festival, Music Under the Stars, Kerrville Folk Festival), they now perform in concert halls around the nation. This group features: vocalist Zhenya Rock, balalaika, accordion, guitar, and banjo; Sergey Vashchenko, balalaika, bass, accordion; Aaryn Russell, guitar and bass balalaika; Dustin Russell, drums, and Corinne Zappler, viola.
Both of these groups perform out of a love for traditional music and classical elegance. Join us for an innovative and exciting performance. Adult tickets are $20, senior citizen and student tickets are $10, and admission for children under the age of 12 is free.
The City of Austin’s Cultural Arts Division, a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts, and an award from the National Endowment all have helped make this event possible. Join us!
