Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

The Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies offers FLAS Fellowships to fund highly competitive graduate and undergraduate students for the study of regional foreign languages, including (but not limited to):

Russian Polish Czech Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian Ukrainian Bulgarian Persian/Tajik* Turkish* Romani* Yiddish*

Other languages may be added pending approval on a case-by-case basis. FLAS awards are available for both academic year (in residence at UT) and summer studies (at UT, abroad or elsewhere in the US).

*Applicants pursuing Persian/Tajik, Turkish, Romani, and Yiddish or any other languages for which they seek approval must show applicability to the study of our region, which includes the Balkans/Southeast Europe, Central/Eastern Europe, the Baltic states, Russia, Central Asia, the Caucasus or the former Soviet sphere of influence.

The Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies is seeking applicants for
Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

Application Deadline: Friday, February 6, 2015 by 5:00 p.m. 

Award Notification: by April 1, 2015
A complete application consists of the following materials: 

**PLEASE DO NOT STAPLE ANY PORTION OF THE APPLICATION**

  • Signed application form (NOTE: To fill this PDF form out electronically, download the latest version of Adobe Reader for free here)
  • Statement of purpose: address how language study will aid your career and/or research goals in no more than 2 pages, single or double spaced.
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation (one should be from a language instructor, if appropriate)
  • A current CV
  • College transcript (unofficial copies accepted)
  • SAT scores (for undergraduates) or GRE scores (for graduates); unofficial scores accepted
  • NEW Competitive priority requirement: Proof of FAFSA submission (not required, but highly recommended)

Students are responsible for ensuring that their application is complete. Incomplete applications will not be considered for funding.


Please submit your application materials by one of the following methods:

  1. Email to<creees@austin.utexas.edu> with "Grad OR Undergrad FLAS First Name Last Name" (i.e., Grad FLAS Jane Doe) in the subject line. All application materials should be submitted in ONE email with your full name and EID on each document submitted. Recommendation letters may be submitted separately by the recommender, ONLY IF "Grad OR Undergrad FLAS Applicant first & last name" are in the subject line (please don't make them guess on this). * Important: DO NOT email applications to a personal staff email account. *
  2. Hand deliver to Burdine Hall (BUR) room 460 and place in the appropriate box for "Grad FLAS Applications" or "Undergrad FLAS Applications"
