Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships

These awards are contingent upon CREEES receiving Title VI funding form the Department of Education. We will NOT be notified of our Title VI funding status until August/September 2014.



CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies is seeking applicants for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships contingent on receiving Title VI funding. The FLAS Fellowships will fund highly competitive graduate and undergraduate students for the study of regional foreign languages, including (but not limited to): Russian, Polish, Czech, Serbo-Croatian, Yiddish and Romani. Check out the list of language courses offered by our department here.
FLAS awards may be available for both academic year and summer studies.

Application Deadline EXTENDED: Friday, May 23rd, 2014 by 5:00 p.m. 

Award Notification: by July 25th; final confirmation of funding will be made in August

A complete application consists of the following materials: 

**PLEASE DO NOT STAPLE ANY PORTION OF THE APPLICATION**

  • Signed application form (NOTE: This PDF form requires the latest version of Adobe Reader; free download available here)
  • Statement of purpose: address how language study will aid your career and/or research goals in no more than 2 pages, single or double spaced.
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation (one must be from a language instructor)
  • A current CV
  • College transcript (unofficial copies accepted)
  • SAT scores (for undergraduates) or GRE scores (for graduates); unofficial scores accepted.

Students are responsible for ensuring that their application is complete. Incomplete applications will not be considered for funding.


Application Deadline EXTENDED: Friday, May 23rd, 2014 by 5:00 p.m.  


Please submit your application materials by one of the following methods:

  1. by email: to creees@austin.utexas.edu with "Grad/Undergrad FLAS First Name Last Name" in the subject line. All application materials should be submitted in ONE email with your full name and EID on each document submitted. Recommendation letters may be submitted separately by the recommender, ONLY IF "Grad/Undergrad FLAS Applicant first & last name" are in the subject line. Important: DO NOT email applications to Agnes Sekowski's or Jenica Jones' UTexas email account.
  2. by hand: to Agnes Sekowski in BUR 444 (graduate students) or to Jenica Jones, Undergraduate Program Coordinator in BUR 452 (undergraduate students)
  3. by mail: (This mailing address may also be used to have GRE/SAT scores mailed, although we will accept unofficial copies).
