The Center for East Asian Studies community at the University of Texas is greatly saddened by the passing of Professor Gordon Bennett on May 11, 2007.

Gordon did much to develop the China program since coming to UT in 1971. Throughout this time he alone at UT taught courses on Chinese Politics, Comparative Politics of East Asia, and East Asian International Relations. He has been director of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations (New York), and is author of Red Guard: the Political Biography of Dai Siao-ai (Doubleday, 1971), Yundong: Mass Campaigns in Chinese Communist Leadership (Berkeley, 1976), Huadong: The Story of a Chinese People's Commune (Westview, 1978), and China's Finance and Trade (M.E. Sharpe, 1978).

As a colleague, he was always gracious and willing to devote his time to our undergraduate and graduate students specializing in China. He was an active participant in the Asian Studies enterprise: the development of the Asian Studies undergraduate and graduate degrees, the organization of symposia and lectures, and outreach to all those interested in China. He was an early champion of good website design as evidenced by his own superbly organized site and his many suggestions for improving the Asian Studies website. We will miss him greatly as a colleague and a friend.
