Talk by Henning Wrage
Using several video clips from East German Television’s very first broadcast to its very last, his presentation will provide an overview of the function and history of the East German "Deutscher Fernsehfunk" (1952-1990). Professor Wrage will demonstrate how East German TV was in a long lasting and fierce competition with its Western competitors and how this informed program politics and design. He will argue that the function of German TV can be explained better by observing it as a system of channels, while other East German media rather follow the setup of cultural fields.
