Course Policy  

 

    This course will introduce students to the script and grammar of Urdu, a language spoken not 

only in the Indian subcontinent but also in the Middle East, Europe and North America. In the 

course of this semester, the “language” and the “languages” of Urdu-Hindi-Hindavi- 

Hindustani-Rekhta will be regionally and politically contextualized as we explore the cultural 

dimensions of the composite, ganga-jumni, milieu of South Asia. 

      By the end of the academic year, students will be able to read and write in the Urdu script. 

All the conventional teaching materials will be supplemented by popular film songs, clips from 

Indian and Pakistani films and newspapers, and works of prose and poetry composed by such 

luminaries as Mirza Ghalib. This is an introductory course, if you can speak, read or write the 

language with considerable fluency, you are expected to be in a more advanced course. 

 

No prior knowledge of Urdu / Hindi is assumed.

Attendance Policy & Class Requirements 

 

 

With each unexcused absence, the student loses 2.5 points from her / his semester grade.  It 

is thus impossible to receive an "A" for the semester if the student has more than four 

unexcused absences. 

 

In addition to regular attendance, the course requirements include completion of 

homework assignments and class participation (30% of grade); in-class exams 

over the material covered in class (40% of grade); a midterm project (10% of 

grade); and a semester final exam (20% of grade). 

 

It is not the instructor’s responsibility to remind students of their absence record. 

Take a timely action and email your instructor right away in the event of an 

absence. In addition, two incidents of tardiness (coming late or leaving early) 

would count as one absence. 

 

Students are also notified to inform the instructor about religious holidays one 

week in advance. 

 

•  In the event of an absence, to inquire about the homework, students are to contact 

their fellow-students not the instructor. 

 

Students are expected to read and prepare material before coming to class. In 

addition, they are expected to bring their book/reading material to each class day.  

 

Instructor reserves the right to make changes to the syllabus, if such need arises. 

 

Homework will be assigned each day of class and will be due on the next class 

day. No late / incomplete homework assignment will count towards the grade. The 

students are requested to do the homework promptly and carefully. The timely 

completion of homework is essential for success in URDU 506. If not turned on 

time, the homework will be checked but students will not get credit. 

 

A student’s grade will be lowered if she / he continuously fails to complete class 

work, assignments or quizzes and does not maintain regular class attendance. The 

assignments would be graded according to the quality and quantity of the work. 

 

Make up for in -class exams will only be given in the event of a documented illness 

or emergency. The provided documentation must be official and not in the 

electronic form. All documentations must be provided as soon as time permits. 

 

It is not instructor’s responsibility to remind students about the note neither will 

the instructor be responsible to email students for missing classes at the time of 

Final grading, the student will be responsible for all the resulting consequences. 

 

Students are responsible to check their email on regular basis. 

 

The content as well as the day of the Oral Exam and Midterm Project will be 

scheduled and announced later in the semester.  

 

The Final Exam must be taken on the date and time scheduled by the university. 

No exceptions will be made. Please make sure to check the final exam schedule 

before making any travel plans or other commitments. 

 

The grading is simple and without any curve. No “extra credit” is offered in this 

class and once the final grade is turned in, it will not be changed (unless the 

instructor has made a mistake in numerical calculation). 

 

Students are also responsible for attending an Urdu-related event, or that has 

some semblance or association with Urdu. Students will be notified about such 

opportunities through email or in class. Your class participation grade may 

depend on a particular assigned event.

UT’s Policy Regarding Academic Dishonesty 

 

The Costs of Scholastic Dishonesty can be Severe.” 

You may see or hear of others cheating. If so, don’t assume that it is tolerated. Students can be 

suspended or expelled permanently from the University for scholastic dishonesty. A failing grade 

in the course is a common sanction. In addition, scholastic dishonesty leads to the creation of a 

disciplinary record, which may impact your future employment and educational opportunities. In 

short, it is simply not worth the risks. Scholastic dishonesty also has consequences that extend

Course Policy 

      The purpose of this class is to help students enhance their Urdu speaking skills. We will 

discuss different topics consistently all throughout the semester and students are expected to use 

their previously acquired vocabulary and grammar skills in order to conduct discussions. 

Students are expected to have taken second-year Urdu / Hindi before enrolling in this class. The 

semester grade will be based upon class participation and attendance records.  

Attendance Policy & Class Requirement  

With each unexcused absence, the student loses 8 points from her / his semester 

grade. It is thus impossible to receive an “A” for the semester if the student has 

more than one unexcused absence. In order for your absence to be considered 

“excused,” you must have a note from the doctor (the note must be official either 

from the doctor or a professor and not be in electronic form). Class participation 

is another critical aspect of Urdu 118K. All students are expected to actively 

participate and be involved in the process and accordingly help in creating a 

better learning environment for all. 

 

It is not the instructor’s responsibility to remind students of their absence record. 

Take a timely action and email your instructor right away in the event of an 

absence. In addition, two incidents of tardiness (coming late or leaving early) 

would count as one absence. 

 

Students are also notified to inform the instructor about religious holidays one 

week in advance. 

 

Students are expected to read and prepare material before coming to class.  

 

Instructor reserves the right to make changes to the syllabus, if such need arises. 

 

A student’s grade will be lowered if she / he continuously fails to complete class 

work, assignments or does not maintain regular class attendance.  

 

 

It is not instructor’s responsibility to remind students about the note neither will 

the instructor be responsible to email students for missing classes at the time of 

Final grading, the student will be responsible for all the resulting consequences. 

 

Students are responsible to check their email on regular basis. 

 

The grading is simple and without any curve. No “extra credit” is offered in this 

class and once the final grade is turned in, it will not be changed (unless the 

instructor has made a mistake in numerical calculation). 

 

Students are also responsible for attending an Urdu-related event, or that has 

some semblance or association with Urdu. Students will be notified about such 

opportunities through email or in class. Your class participation grade may 

depend on a particular assigned event.

The Costs of Scholastic Dishonesty can be Severe.” 

You may see or hear of others cheating. If so, don’t assume that it is tolerated. Students can be 

suspended or expelled permanently from the University for scholastic dishonesty. A failing grade 

in the course is a common sanction. In addition, scholastic dishonesty leads to the creation of a 

disciplinary record, which may impact your future employment and educational opportunities. In 

short, it is simply not worth the risks. Scholastic dishonesty also has consequences that extend
