Advising Services

The Economics Department Undergraduate Advising Office provides a variety of advising services relevant to the time of semester, your academic status, and/or stage of your college career. For your convenience, we have provided descriptions and guidelines below. Currently we do not assign students to specific advisors but you are welcome to request a specific advisor and we will do our best to accommodate your preference. Please feel free to contact our office with questions, BRB 1.114, 512-471-2973, ecoadvisors@utlists.utexas.edu

If you are a NEW student please take time to review our Advising Syllabus (PDF) as well, in order to understand your role in an advising session.

  • General Advising is open to anyone, on a walk-in basis (call our office for walk-in hours). General Advising includes everything from answering quick questions, to doing general planning, to discussing the major, to helping you sort out a problem. Learn more about General Advising.
  • Registration Advising is open to all Economics majors, usually on an appointment basis during regular office hours, in designated periods. Registration Advising sessions begin a couple of weeks before the start of registration and are quick meetings to review your degree audit and discuss your courses for the coming semester. Learn more about Registration Advising.
  • Strategic Advising is open to all Economics majors, by appointment, year-round excluding select periods. In Strategic Advising sessions, an advisor works with you to develop a plan to graduation--incorporating course selection, extracurricular opportunities, and university programs and services--tailored to your academic/career interests and goals. Learn more about Strategic Advising.
  • Success Advising is required for Liberal Arts majors on scholastic probation (below a 2.0 UT GPA), by appointment, upon notification of your status. In Success Advising sessions, an advisor explains the terms for getting off scholastic probation and/or avoiding scholastic dismissal, and discusses with you strategies/services for improving performance. Learn more about Success Advising.
  • New or Prospective Student Advising We are happy to meet with prospective and new students. However, we recommend that you review our Information for New and Prospective Students page before contacting our office for an advising session. Learn more about New Student Advising

General Advising

General advising is available throughout the year* on a walk-in basis in BRB 1.114. Call our office for walk-in hours. We are happy to answer any questions you have about the major and/or your degree requirements, help you navigate UT policy, connect you to helpful services, and so on. Please feel free to come by and visit.

*During the following periods General Advising sessions may be limited to urgent issues:

  1. the first twelve class days of a semester
  2. during Registration Advising
  3. during registration and add/drops

Walk-ins are met on a first-come, first-served basis. Session periods vary depending on the nature of the visit. Please bring your UT ID card so that you can swipe-in at our reception desk. The first available advisor will meet with you. If you prefer to meet with a specific advisor, you may request them. If you prefer to make an appointment ahead of time, it can usually be arranged by calling or emailing our office.

Registration Advising

Registration Advising starts approximately two weeks prior to the start of registration for the next semester. This typically occurs mid-April for Summer and Fall registration, and late October for Spring registration. See the Academic Calendar for exact dates.

Please come prepared for a brief session, focusing on registration planning only. It is helpful to review your degree audit and the course schedule (if available) before coming in. The session will take less time if you are somewhat familiar with the degree requirements you are lacking, and have a tentative list of courses to take. Making a list of questions might also be helpful.

Registration Advising is usually done on an appointment basis during the official Registration Advising Period. See the Academic Calendar for exact dates. The session is limited to 20 minutes. Please contact the Economics Department Undergraduate Advising Office to make an appointment (512-471-2973, BRB 1.114). Walk-in registration advising appointments may be available prior to the official registration advising period. Check with our office for details.

Strategic Advising

Advising sessions take approximately 30 minutes. Please contact the Economics Department Undergraduate Advising Office to make an appointment (512-471-2973, BRB 1.114).

Strategic Advising sessions are available year-round excluding the following periods:

  1. the first twelve class days of a semester
  2. during Registration Advising
  3. during registration and add/drops

All Economics majors are encouraged to participate in at least one Strategic Advising session. The best time to schedule a Strategic Advising session is during sophomore year (30-59 hours completed).

SUCCESS Advising

SUCCESS advising is required for Economics majors who have been notified by the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s Office that they are on scholastic probation. Those who are notified will have a registration bar on their records and should contact the Economics Undergraduate Advising Office for a Success Advising appointment.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. stands for Support, Understanding, Commitment, and Conference to Enable Scholastic Strength. During the meeting you and your advisor will create a SUCCESS Agreement which details the terms by which you can be removed from scholastic probation and/or avoid scholastic dismissal. Success Agreements can only be done after the 12th class day of the semester in which you are on scholastic probation. For example, if you are notified at the end of the Fall semester that you will be placed on Scholastic Probation for the Spring semester, your Success Agreement must be created after the 12th class day of the Spring semester.
Success Advising is on an appointment basis. The session takes approximately 30 minutes. Please contact the Economics Department Undergraduate Advising Office to make an appointment (512-471-2973, BRB 1.114). You may be asked by your advisor to fill out a questionnaire prior to your meeting.

New/Prospective Student Advising

We recommend that you review our Information for New and Prospective Students page for detailed information.

If you are newly admitted to UT (whether freshman or transfer) we strongly encourage you to attend Orientation for your initial advising session.

If you are already a UT student and are interested in adding or switching to the economics major we are happy to meet with you for a General Advising session to answer questions about the major. You can declare the major here.

If you are a prospective student (high school student or student at another institution) we are happy to answer your question about the major. We recommend that you schedule an appointment with our office. Questions about admission to UT should be directed to UT Admissions.  There are no separate admissions requirements for the economics major. You can select economics as your preferred major on your admissions application and/or declare economics as your major once you are admitted to UT.
