Placement Committee Events: 2010-11
NOTE: Many of the events below are geared specifically to those planning to look for a university teaching position. If you are considering other kinds of work, you should ALSO be making use of the services of the Office of Professional Development and Community Engagement beginning early in your graduate program. Recruitment in other professions does not follow the calendar used in academic searches; you must take the initiative. Please do plan to attend our May "Career Paths" workshop to hear from UT PhDs who are enjoying careers outside of the college classroom and to learn about campus resources to prepare you for such positions.
In order to reduce stress and increase focus on early material writing, the Placement Committee held most informational workshops last spring. With a few exceptions, our attention this fall will be on individual consultations. Please contact the Placement Committee in addition to your dissertation advisors to discuss your materials. Check this site regularly for updates -- additional meetings and workshops will be held in Spring 2011.
- This month you should be circulating your polished materials (CV, job letter, dissertation abstract, writing sample, teaching statement) to your committee and the Placement Committee for final revisions. Remember (1) that a compelling cover letter usually reflects around 50 hours of work, (2) that the first three pages of your writing sample are of paramount importance, and (3) that your recommenders need to see polished versions of all your materials in order to write on your behalf. (Good recommendation letters can take several hours to write, so be sure to give your dissertation committee ample time.)
- Set up your credentials account with Interfolio (through Jester Career Services). Be sure to select "University of Texas at Austin -- Graduate Department of English" as your affiliation. This will allow the Graduate Office to add recommendation letters to your account, and the Placement Committee to review your materials. If your file was automatically transferred from Jester, or if you have already set up an account, please send a message to Amy Stewart in the Grad Office requesting that the Departmental Affiliation be added to your account. Ask your recommenders to submit letters of recommendation to Amy Stewart in the Grad Office by early October as many positions have November 1 deadlines, and a few always have deadlines that fall even earlier. Students should show final versions of job materials to their advisors and/or members of the Placement Committee well in advance of that same deadline.
- Register for the MLA Convention. Hotel and travel arrangements can now be made through the MLA website. Hotel rooms (especially at the more affordable options) tend to fill up fast, so it's advisable to make reservations now (and adjustments/cancellations later, if necessary).
