Biography

Meredith holds a MA from the University of Texas at Austin and a BA in French and Art History from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She has also studied at the Université Lumière Lyon 2 where her interests in French visual culture developed. Before pursuing a doctorate in French Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, Meredith spent a year in Munich learning German. She is currently in second year of the PhD program and plans to complete her dissertation in Spring 2016. Meredith's research focuses broadly on 19th century French literature and visual culture. More specifically, her work examines the interaction between visual and verbal modes of representation in artistic production, paying close attention to theories of vision, changing technologies, and the industrialization of space and time and how these discourses are reflected in new forms of representation such as the croquis, bandes dessinées, and photography. These interests have culminated in her most current research on the figure of the photograph-écrivain(es) and écrivain(es)-photographe, as illustrated, for example in the work of Emile Zola.
