Husband and wife Sganarelle and Martine get into an argument. At the same time, Geronte's daughter, Lucinde, becomes "mute" when her father wants her to marry someone other than Leandre, and no doctor yet has been able to cure her. Hilarity ensues when Martine revenges herself on Sganarelle by telling Geronte's servants that Sganarelle is a doctor, he just won't admit it unless he's beaten! What follows is questionable medical advice, slapstick humor, and not-so-subtle attempts at seduction.
