Greg Knapp and Matt LaFevor's election to the three-member Board of Directors of the History of Geography Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers was confirmed at the AAG's national meetings in Los Angeles (April 11, 2013). The Specialty Group promotes research and the exchange of information pertaining to the history of geography and advances scholarship that contributes to a deeper understanding of the evolution of the discipline. Professor Knapp's publications on this topic include a history of the Department of Geography and Environment at the University of Texas, a biographical essay on cultural geographer Terry Jordan, and historical studies of Andeanist geography. One of LaFevor’s current projects traces the development of geographical societies in 18th and 19th century Mexico. The work is based on primary source transcription of correspondence from the scientific missions of Mexican polymath – priest, scientist, historian, and cartographer – José Antonio de Alzate (1737-1799).
