Joint Program Events
Euthyphrones
This discussion group of "straight-thinkers" brings together graduate students and faculty on a weekly basis for close reading and analysis of selected Greek philosophical texts. It also sponsors occasional presentations of work-in-progress by members of the group and visiting scholars. Meetings are informal and open to anyone interested. Students in the Joint Program should try to participate regularly.
To join the group's email-list (or to be removed), contact the Director.
Lectures and Colloquia
The Departments of Classics and Philosophy sponsor numerous talks by visiting scholars and philosophers throughout the year, including many on topics in or closely related to ancient philosophy. These talks are valuable opportunities to learn about current research in the field and different methods and approaches. They are also a rich source of ideas for research and dissertations.
Ancient Philosophy Workshop
This annual event began in 1978. Held on a weekend in the Spring, either here or on another campus in the region, the workshops bring together specialists in ancient philosophy from around the country and world. Workshops typically comprise eight to ten talks on "work in progress" and discussion is usually introduced by a prepared response. A congenial atmosphere promotes both critical debate and informal discussion. The workshops are especially popular among graduates of the Joint Program, most of whom have returned at least once.
Current graduate students in the Joint Program regularly participate either by offering a prepared response or by presenting a paper of their own. Many a dissertation has benefited from the constructive criticism afforded by these events. Workshops are also good opportunities to make contacts for your research and job prospects.
