Rational social learning and how existing knowledge influences imagination and science

Developmental Area talks Fall 2013

David Sobel, Department of Psychology, Brown University

In this talk, I will describe a model of rational social learning in young children. The experiments suggest from a very early age, children track the accuracy with which informants generate information, that children learn judiciously from others, and that children base their judgments of others' reliability on the integration of their existing knowledge and data observed from those informants. I then consider whether this rational account extends to other domains in cognitive development, focusing on judgments about the fantasy/reality status of objects and events in stories, as well as children's ability to engage in scientific reasoning.
