Solaris by Andrey Tarkovsky. It was made 40 years ago in 1972, and is a film adaptation (and then some) of Polish sci-fi writer Stanislaw Lem's eponymous tale of future scientists studying an enigmatic planet. Lem didn't like the film, famously complaining that Tarkovsky injected the Russian soul into his novel, which - considering this was during the Cold War - is an understandable complaint, but that doesn't change the fact that this is one of those rare instances where the movie actually is better than the book.
Warning: Like 12, which we saw last Sunday, Solaris is another Russian whopper, weighing in at a solid 2 hrs 45 min.
