Bodies in Print: The Medical Literature of Early Colonial Mexico

This talk highlights a group of texts published in, and about, New Spain from 1567 to 1595 that explored questions of health from the vantage point of science.  These works range in scope and form from anatomical treatises, to surgical manuals, to projects modeled on natural history.  It seeks to outline the limits of a normative notion of the body in the print culture of the period, as it brings into sharper focus the place medical writing had within the larger context of early modern Hispanic literature in the Americas.
