Our graduate student Silvia Lorenso has won the prestigious one year CAPES Research Fellowship
for 2011-2012. This fellowship is granted by the Ministry of Education in Brazil. Lorenso obtained this fellowship to support a year of research for her dissertation project entitled “Poeticas Afrodiásporicas nas Américas: Cooperifa e Nuyorican Poets Cafe.”
Her dissertation focuses on the role of poetry, Afro-diasporic identities and social communities in Brazil (São Paulo), Puerto Rico and the diaspora (San Juan, NY). Her analysis centers on the power that poetry and literacy have to to transform communities in peripheral urban areas. Furthermore, she studies the important role that Afro-diasporic memories and cultural agency have played in the development of poetry as a language of socio-political action.
