Gulf Coast journal awards annual nonfiction prize to Associate Professor Judith Kroll

Fri, November 5, 2010

The Department of English congratulates Associate Professor Judith Kroll, whose lyric essay "Happy Families" won the 2010 Gulf Coast Prize in Nonfiction. The essay, available online (click here), appears in issue 23.1, published in October. In addition to publication, Kroll received a $1000 honorarium.

Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts awards three prizes annually, one each in the categories of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. Author Eula Biss chose Kroll's essay "Happy Families" to receive this year's nonfiction prize. "Happy Families” comes from one of Kroll's current projects, a manuscript of lyric essays connected with India. The essays often move backwards and forwards in time, and between India and America.

Associate Professor Judith Kroll has been teaching at UT since 1989. Her publications include two collections of poetry, In the Temperate Zone and Our Elephant & That Child; Chapters in a Mythology: The Poetry of Sylvia Plath; and Bhava, a novel translated from the Kannada with its author, U.R. Ananthamurthy.
