Though often discounted by literary scholars, Voltaire's theater translates onto the dramatic stage the very questions of the political stage that the philosophe addresses elsewhere in his œuvre. By historically contextualizing Voltaire's first play Œdipe, a response to Corneille's seventeenth-century rewriting of the ancient Oedipus Rex, I investigate how tragedy both engages with and challenges official representations of the king's symbolic royal body and how these representations evolve with the dawn of the Enlightenment.
