Convocatoria para el período académico 2009-2010

Como en años anteriores, El Centro Mexicano de la Universidad de Texas en Austin a través del fondo “Cátedra C.B. Smith Sr.” y mediante la aportación de donaciones privadas, ofrecerá hasta 15 becas de viaje a investigadores mexicanos con un título de doctorado pertenecientes a facultades de universidades mexicanas o a centros de investigación avanzada. Dichas becas están destinadas para utilizar los recursos bibliográficos y académicos que ofrece la Universidad de Texas en Austin, particularmente los archivos y materiales en la destacada biblioteca “Nettie Lee Benson”. (En el caso de investigadores con un rango avanzado dentro del cuerpo administrativo de museos de arte mexicano el título profesional substituye el título de doctorado).

Por primera vez en 2004, se agregaron a éste programa otras dos fuentes de recursos por parte de la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores y por parte de la UNAM, respectivamente. Favor de dirigirse a los responsables de dichos programas (véase dirección al final de este documento) para hacer una solicitud ante éstas instituciones. En el caso de que el solicitante cumpla con los requisitos de cada programa, se permiten solicitudes múltiples a cada fuente, pero no es posible juntar dos becas o recibir más de una beca en el mismo año. La beca consiste en un máximo de $2,000 (dos mil dólares) los cuales se utilizan para cubrir gastos de transportación aérea y/o alojamiento, los cuales son pagados directamente a la compañía aérea y al hotel (la modalidad de pago de la beca no incluye reembolso por gastos de manutención durante la estadía). El becario se compromete a permanecer un mínimo de 10 días (las bibliotecas permanecen abiertas los sábados y domingos durante el semestre académico que va de finales de Agosto a principios de Diciembre, y de mediados de Enero a principios de Mayo). Dada la competitividad de este concurso se sugiere que los candidatos seleccionados soliciten una contribución, ya sea parcial o total a la de esta beca, por parte de la institución de origen. En tal caso se espera que el becario extienda su estancia y/o cuente con el apoyo económico de la institución de origen para cubrir los gastos de transportación.

El propósito principal de este apoyo económico es:

• Brindar a los investigadores mexicanos la oportunidad de consultar las importantes colecciones de manuscritos, libros, pinturas, fotografías y diversos materiales relacionados con México y Latinoamérica que alberga esta universidad.

Asimismo, se ofrecen los siguientes beneficios a los ganadores de este concurso:

• La posibilidad de un intercambio académico con investigadores de diversas disciplinas y campos de investigación dentro de esta universidad.
• Explorar la posibilidad de desarrollar programas de enseñaza bilateral a distancia entre la Universidad de Texas y la institución correspondiente en México.

Entre las colecciones sobre México destacan: la biblioteca Nettie Lee-Benson, la biblioteca de la Facultad de Derecho, la colección de arte latinoamericano del siglo XX en el Museo de Arte Jack S. Blanton, la biblioteca de la Facultad de Bellas Artes con materiales en musicología y etnomusicología, la biblioteca y banco de datos del Centro de Investigación sobre Población, y la biblioteca Lyndon B. Johnson que cuenta con los archivos oficiales de la administración del Presidente Johnson.

Los viajes de investigación se llevan a cabo generalmente durante los períodos académicos, esto es, entre fines de Agosto y principios de Diciembre, y entre Enero y mediados de Mayo. Se pueden tomar en consideración otras fechas bajo circunstancias especiales, sin embargo se hace notar que tanto el profesorado como el personal en áreas de investigación se encuentran, generalmente, fuera de Austin con excepción de los períodos mencionados.

Los interesados deberán enviar la siguiente documentación antes del 27 de Marzo de 2009:

• Carta detallando el área de investigación y el beneficio que el interesado espera recibir al consultar los recursos bibliotecarios de la universidad (máximo tres cuartillas), indicando el nombre de la(s) biblioteca(s) que desea consultar y el nombre(s) del personal académico con quien desea entrevistarse.
• Curriculum vitae (máximo dos cuartillas), incluyendo nivel de conocimiento de inglés (excelente, medio, básico), y una lista de publicaciones.
• Carta de nominación del director académico de la institución de origen, indicando si ésta cuenta con fondos de apoyo paralelos o de otra índole para respaldar al candidato en caso de resultar dentro de los ganadores del concurso del período 2009-10.

Favor de especificar claramente la dirección a donde deberá enviárse el resultado de la competencia, así como número de teléfono y/o fax, y de ser posible una dirección de correo electrónico. Los resultados de la competencia se darán a conocer en Mayo de 2009.

E. D. Farmer International Fellowship

Objective

The Forty-first Texas Legislature created the E. D. Farmer International Fellowship with the purpose of building friendship and fostering goodwill between Texas and Mexico. This fellowship provides financial support to conduct research, fieldwork, or studies in Mexico or to undertake graduate studies or research activities at The University of Texas at Austin.

Eligibility

The E. D. Farmer International Fellowship is limited to applicants from Mexico or Texas. To become an eligible candidate for the fellowship, applicants must submit their applications under one of the following categories:

1) Mexican students applying to UT Austin

Eligible students are Mexican citizens who are applying to an undergraduate or graduate program at UT Austin.. Successful applicants will become eligible for in-state tuition and a monthly stipend for nine months, the amount of which will depend on available funds. If you are applying under this category, please present the following documents:

• Application form (PDF, 84K)
• A two-page essay (1,200 words maximum) stating your academic and professional goals (include any current research, scholarly, or artistic interests, and list and describe any published articles, research, or other creative work accomplished to date)
• Transcripts from the university from which you graduated or from which you are transferring
• Letters of recommendation and confidential reference forms (PDF, 76K) from two faculty at your university (Please have faculty mail these letters and forms directly to the Mexican Center.)
• Nomination from the authorities of the school from which you received your graduate or undergraduate degree in Mexico.

2) Mexican students currently studying at UT Austin

Eligible students are Mexican citizens currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program at UT Austin. Exchange program students are not eligible for the award. If the fellowship is requested to support living expenses, the fellows may be eligible for in-state tuition and will receive a monthly stipend for nine months. If the fellowship is requested to support research expenses, funding will depend on the research budget and availability of funds. Please present the following documents if you are applying under this category:

• A two-page essay (1,200 words maximum) stating your academic and professional goals (include any current research, scholarly, or artistic interests, and list and describe any published articles, research, or other creative work accomplished to date; if you are seeking funds to support research expenses, include a one-page preliminary budget as an attachment
• Transcripts (of two previous semesters of enrollment at either UT or other institutions)
• Letters of recommendation and confidential reference forms (PDF, 76K) from two faculty at your university (Please have faculty mail these letters and forms directly to the Mexican Center.)

3) Applicants from the State of Texas

Applicants from the State of Texas are students who have completed satisfactorily at least two years of study at an accredited college or university, one of these two years having been completed at UT Austin. This fellowship can only be used to support research conducted in Mexico, and its stipend varies according to the research budget. Please present the following documents:

• A two-page essay stating your academic and professional goals. Include any current research, scholarly, or artistic interests, and list and describe any published articles, research, or other creative work accomplished to date. Applicants should indicate the Mexican university with which they will be affiliated during their work in Mexico.
• Spanish reference form (PDF, 75K)
• Transcripts (of two previous semesters of enrollment at either UT or other institutions)
• Letters of recommendation and confidential reference forms (PDF, 76K) from two faculty at your university (Please have faculty mail these letters and forms directly to the Mexican Center.)

Applications must be submitted no later than February 27, 2009.

Republic of Mexico Solidaridad Endowed Presidential Fellowship

Objective

In 1991, the President of The University of Texas at Austin endowed this fellowship to honor the visit of Mexico’s President Carlos Salinas de Gortari to our campus. This fellowship is intended to support research on any topic about Mexico that will be incorporated into a thesis, policy report, or dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements to complete a graduate or undergraduate degree.

Eligibility

Mexican citizens who are pursuing any academic major at the undergraduate and graduate level at UT Austin may apply for this fellowship.

Documents to present:

• Application form (PDF, 73K)
• Curriculum vitae (one to two pages maximum)
• Current transcript of studies at UT Austin
• Two letters of recommendation from faculty members who have taught applicant at UT Austin
• A brief statement (maximum two pages, single-spaced) outlining the specific ways in which the scholarship would further the student research, taking care to specify directly how the work will be incorporated into a final product (chapter, research paper, core data for a policy report, etc.). Avoid broad statements, such as part of a dissertation or a paper to be submitted as part of the Ph.D. degree requirements.

Stipend

The stipend will be disbursed over the course of two semesters.

Applications must be submitted no later than February 27, 2009.
