Workshop: "Philanthropy in Latin America: Dawn of a New Era?"

Thu, October 25, 2012 • 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM • 2nd Floor Conference Room, Benson Latin American Collection, SRH Unit 1

The point of departure for this workshop is that philanthropy of diverse types is on the rise in Latin America, due not only to unprecedented levels of economic dynamism, but also to basic shifts of attitude among donor groups, whether private individuals, corporations, civil society foundations, or religious organizations. Our principal objectives are twofold: to explore the consequences of this shift in relation to basic issues of social change and societal advancement (education, health, economic welfare, structural inequalities, etc.) and to map key research questions for the future.

This workshop will have two principal sessions, the first oriented toward scholarly research and the second toward reflections from practical experience. In a brief concluding plenary, speakers and participants will work together to review a preliminary report on key research questions related to philanthropy in Latin America.
