Lecture: "Sylvia & Aki: Coming of Age in the Era of Segregation"

Winifred Conking's book, Sylvia & Aki, was awarded the 2012 Tomás Rivera Children's Book Award for chronicling the lives of Silvia Méndez and Aki Munemitsu who simultaneoulsy face the injustices of segregation and relocation respectively.

Sylvia Méndez will provide firsthand testimony of the family's experience which subsequently won the appellate decision in the Mendez v. Westminster School District case making California the first state to desegregate schools in the U.S. 7 years before Brown v. Board of Education.

Reception with light refreshments to follow.  Free and open to the public.  Validation available for parking at Manor garage across from the football stadium.
