"Portal" Features Cardoso Interview and In-Depth Faculty Pieces

Thu, August 30, 2007

Portal, the annual review of LLILAS events and activities, published its second issue as fall classes began. The attractive four-color publication, available in both print and electronic formats, is also posted on the LLILAS Web site.

Continuing its mission to reflect the broad reach of LLILAS as an area studies program, the second issue focuses on UT's commitment to develop closer institutional relations with Latin America in a broad range of fields.

Think pieces by faculty examine Latin America's emerging environmental democracy, the 2006 Mexico elections, "value added” in trade relations, and the status of the left. In an interview with a LLILAS graduate, former Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso reflects on his years in office and future plans. A group of Law School and LLILAS students head to Colombia with Prof. Karen Engle to examine human rights and property issues.

Students write of their study abroad experiences in Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru, made possible through Lozano Long scholarships. Portal continues its coverage of Benson Collection acquisitions, recent collaborations of the Blanton Museum, and Latin Americanist faculty profiles.
