MDRC, Technical Research Analyst (3102-65), Application Deadline, BTT Gateway Job ID 7580

Mon, December 2, 2013

MDRC is seeking a technical researcher to join the Low-Wage Workers and Communities policy group. Technical researchers help MDRC maintain the highest standards of data quality and integrity. MDRC receives data files from a variety of sources and in a variety of formats. Technical researchers convert these data files to a form that is useful for answering research questions. Technical researchers often participate actively in quantitative analyses and contribute to new methodological advances. Because most of MDRC’s data collection is of primary data, technical researchers are at the cutting edge of policy research.

MDRC technical researchers have the unusual opportunity to work as part of multidisciplinary teams on current social policy issues in a dynamic and challenging environment — under the guidance and supervision of leading public policy researchers. New technical research analysts will have the opportunity to support a range of projects focused on improving the lives of low-wage workers and communities. Projects include (1) conditional cash transfers programs, (2) public housing and employment programs, (3) asset-building, and (4) community improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities:

The main responsibility of technical researchers is to collect, process, manage, and analyze a variety of quantitative data sets to help other researchers determine the effectiveness of social programs and policies. Key responsibilities include:
• Contribute to the development and implementation of statistical models for a variety of purposes, including estimation of experimental and quasi-experimental program impacts, fuzzy matching, spatial analysis, and time series analysis.
• Contribute to the development, administration, and analysis of survey data collection efforts, including pre-testing, sub-sampling, response analysis, and development of weighting procedures.
• SAS computer programming to create outcome measures, restructure data files, perform data-cleaning operations, and analysis.
• Create codebooks and other data documentation.
• Contribute to and implement the project team’s data management and security plans.
• Acquisition of administrative and public data.
• Writing technical memos that document data processing decisions and summarize the quality of data.
• Contribute to analytical sections of research reports.

Qualifications:
• Demonstrated experience using statistical software (SAS preferred). Experience in using SAS or a comparable software package for a current or recent job for an extended research project is highly valued. Candidates should be able to speak knowledgeably about and provide detailed descriptions of their current or recent use of SAS or a comparable software package.
• Experience with geographic data processing and analysis is highly desired.
• BA/BS or master’s degree in statistics, economics, public policy, community development, sociology, psychology, computer programming, mathematics, or a related field preferred.
• A good understanding of quantitative research methods and experience applying quantitative research methods.
• Strong data management experience is highly desired.
• Experience with Microsoft Office (especially Word and Excel).
• Strong technical documentation skills.
• Excellent attention to detail.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Some on-the-job training is provided; salary and title contingent upon experience.

Please attach a programming sample to your application.

Only candidates selected for further consideration will be contacted.

As an Equal Opportunity Employer, MDRC strongly encourages minorities, women, veterans, and persons with disabilities to apply. Legal work authorization required.
