Dr. Mounira Maya Charrad, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, and students from her Plan II Honors Program Spring 2010 Junior Seminar present a slide show on "The Veil: Images and Debates in the Modern World."
The slide show is a collective effort resulting from the research of students in the seminar including Arvin Akhavan, Barbara Borodziewicz, Reid Campbell (co-presenter of slide show), Priya Kumar, Valerie Lai, Amy Parks, Lauren Pinkerton, Sarah Satinsky, Johanna Tyler (co-presenter of slide show). It addresses the history and politics of veiling. It will be preceded by a brief introduction by Dr. Charrad and followed by a discussion involving the students.
Dr. Charrad is the author of the award winning book, States and Women's Rights: The Making of Postcolonial Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco (Univ of California Press). Her interests center on women's rights, law, citizenship and state formation. Her current research considers conceptions of modernity in legal discourses in the Middle East.
