Preparing for classes

Dear colleagues,

As you’re aware, all classes will resume Wednesday at 8 a.m. We are providing guidance here for classes and labs scheduled to take place in person this week.

University staff have been checking campus buildings (on the main campus and Pickle Research Campus) to identify leaks and damage and verify buildings are cleared for occupancy. The vast majority of the campus has been checked and cleared for occupancy with a few exceptions — the Norman Hackerman Building (NHB) on the main campus and the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Research Center (EME) on the Pickle Research Campus (details below).

If you are scheduled to teach an in person (or hybrid) class or lab on campus this week, we are asking all instructors to come to campus and check your equipment. This is particularly important for lab equipment (vent hoods, burners, eye wash stations, etc.) to confirm your lab is ready. Please do so soon before your class time and communicate your plans to students.

If you come across a water leak, find any problems with your lab facilities or any other facilities-related issues, please report it by calling 512-471-2020 or visiting the facilities service center.

NHB and EME have not been cleared for occupancy. The university is investigating damage created by the recent storm. Classes and labs will not be held this week in NHB and EME and will likely be moved. Instructors who are scheduled to hold in person classes and labs in NHB and EME this week will soon receive guidance. If you are scheduled to teach an in person class or lab in NHB or EME, please reach out to your students to communicate your plans. Faculty who supervise staff in these buildings should also communicate your plans as soon possible.

We appreciate your patience and flexibility. Please know our staff are working diligently to address damage and return the campus to an operational capacity as quickly as possible.

Sincerely,

Dan Jaffe
