Abstract

Judging from the Plio-Pleistocene lithofacies and biofacies present in the homonid-bearing formations of Eastern Java, and other geological data, Homo erectus' homeland was a volcanic archipelago that contained mountains, seacoasts, and various intermediate geographic settings like modern Java. Using the modern ecology of the region as a guide, the diverse paleophysiography of the Plio-Pleistocene is seen to reflect a wide renge of resources and ecosystems on which early homonids could have relied.
